Athens will transform major downtown streets and boulevards, about 5 miles worth, to walkways, including the renovation of Omonia Square in downtown. The Great Walk (in Greek Megalos Peripatos) is a major project that will radically change the image of the historic center of Athens. Visitors will have the opportunity to get to know up close while on foot, important historical and archaeological sites, as well as the multiple amenities of the city.

According to the plan, a 6.3 km walk will be created, exclusively for pedestrians, without vehicles, on 8 major and minor roads. Thus, the unification of the historic center of Athens is expanded and an additional 50,000 square meters of free public space is given. Latest change is the Syntagma square.

The Great Walk will include the major downtown routes of V. Amalias, V. Olgas, Herodes Atticus, V. Sofia, Panepistimiou, Athinas, Mitropoleos and Ermou, as well as the area of Plaka and the Commercial Triangle. The intervention will also include Patision (October 28), from Omonia to Egypt Square for the unification of the Walk with the National Archaeological Museum. In the next stage, the connection of Kerameikos with the Plato Academy will be implemented, in order to include in the Walk the specific, unique archaeological site.
